Today, we met with Training and Range Leadership to discuss several important issues regarding the current training cycle. During the meeting, we were informed that there had been a significant number of training reschedules for a variety of reasons. As we are nearing the end of the current training cycle, it is important that all SPOs understand the impact of incomplete qualifications. Any SPO who does not complete the required training before their qualification expires will be placed into a restricted status.
We strongly encourage all members to report to the range fully prepared, with all the required gear, and ready to successfully complete the training evolution.
Several concerns previously raised by the membership were addressed during this meeting, and we are pleased to report that some positive changes have been accepted. The frequency of the LSPT will return to its original interval, and LSPTs will only be evaluated on qualification days. During weapons refresher training, LSPT drills will still be conducted. However, they will now be utilized strictly for training and familiarization purposes and will no longer be administered as a pass/fail requirement.
We also discussed the lighting concerns identified during the night qualification portion of training. It was determined that the incorrect unit of measurement was used when conducting the lighting assessment, which resulted in conditions that were not compliant with the applicable standard. This issue has since been corrected. We want to thank the members who brought this concern to our attention.
Additionally, after obtaining a calibrated light meter, Safety Officer Daniel Wood’s attention to detail was instrumental in identifying the root cause and helping implement the corrective action. As a result, any SPO who received a failure related solely to the night qualification portion will be made whole. Those failures will be removed from the record, and affected SPOs will receive their shooting bonus based on the score they originally qualified with.
Additional topics discussed included the importance of maintaining a productive and professional training environment, as well as concerns surrounding the scrutiny and evaluation of barricade shooting. Please know that we do not take your concerns lightly and will continue to address issues as they are brought forward.
Thank you for the continued trust and support you place in us to represent the membership and advocate on your behalf.
Respectfully,
Eric Davis
